Faulty electrical wiring can lead to many problems, so it is important to keep a close eye on what problems your electrical systems may be having. Ignoring these problems can lead to serious damage, so consider these warning signs to prevent electrical-related fires and more.

Warning Signs
  • If your circuit breaker is frequently tripping, it may be overloaded or there is a problem with your wiring. It may also mean that there is a faulty electrical appliance connected to the circuit.
  • If you notice your lights are dimming, it may be caused by faulty wiring or an overloaded circuit.
  • If you notice flickering lights, it may be caused by fixture damage or an outdated electrical system.
  • If you hear a slight buzzing sound coming from any electrical outlets or switches, it may be from either your device or loose wiring in the box. Also check if the cover-plates and outlet faces are hot to the touch.
  • If you smell burnt plastic, it means that there is wire damage. The smell can be very faint, but if noticed call your electrician immediately.

Thank you for mentioning noticing flickering lights. This has been happening so often recently in our home that we're starting to get worried. We know that the previous owners didn't update all of the electrical so it's pretty likely that that's where the problem lies. We'll be sure to get someone to come check it out soon.

Wow, I never thought that smelling burnt plastic is a sign that I have to call for electric repairs. As far as I know, the lights that are frequently dimming in the kitchen is not caused by anything I've done so far. I'll try to call an electrician this month since there's a slight buzzing sound is coming from the outlet in the kitchen.

I had no idea that your lights may start to dim if your wiring is malfunctioning. Ever since I installed some new lightbulbs for my living room in preparation for an upcoming house party, I have noticed that the room tends to get darker when I leave the lights on for more than an hour at a time. Maybe I should consider finding an electrician that can help us determine if my home's wiring is functioning properly.

In order to master the ins and outs of electricity, licensed professionals have had to complete coursework. They had to not only study and pass tests, but they also had to spend time working out in the field, gaining practical experience in the process. To find out more about a pro's past work, a homeowner might check with the local board of electrical contractors. Is his or her driver's license current? Are there any unresolved grievances against them? It's crucial to look into these things.
