In the month of May, Electrical Safety Month is celebrated. As the month comes to an end, it doesn't mean that you should forget about important safety tips to stay safe all year long.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) put together a "Quick Card" list of thing to keep in mind year round.
  • Electrical hazards can cause burns, shocks and electrocution (death).
  • Assume that all overhead wires are energized at lethal voltages. Never assume that a wire is safe to touch even if it is down or appears to be insulated.
  • Never touch a fallen overhead power line. Call the electric utility company to report fallen electrical lines.
  • Stay at least 10 feet (3 meters) away from overhead wires during cleanup and other activities. If working at heights or handling long objects, survey the area before starting work for the presence of overhead wires.
  • If an overhead wire falls across your vehicle while you are driving, stay inside the vehicle and continue to drive away from the line. If the engine stalls, do not leave your vehicle. Warn people not to touch the vehicle or the wire. Call or ask someone to call the local electric utility company and emergency services.
  • Never operate electrical equipment while you are standing in water.
  • Never repair electrical cords or equipment unless qualified and authorized.
  • Have a qualified electrician inspect electrical equipment that has gotten wet before energizing it.
  • If working in damp locations, inspect electric cords and equipment to ensure that they are in good condition and free of defects, and use a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI).
  • Always use caution when working near electricity.

I completely agree that safety measures shouldn't ever be forgotten. It's why I think it helps to review things every now and then. Something that I think would help is to make sure all the electrical equipment and goods are in decent condition. I feel like that's something that could cause a few mishaps.

I love the tips mentioned in the article. Forgetting the safety and that too in electrical field is very dangerous and nearly fatal. So it is the first thing that one should keep in mind before taking things into own hands.

I appreciate the tip to stay at least 10 feet away from overhead wires during cleanup. The electrical system in my home has been having a lot of issues lately, and I think that I should get electric services to help me out. By keeping away from wires at a safe distance, and getting professional help, I hope to get my home back in top electrical shape.

I am glad you said to never operate electrical equipment while you are standing in water. My brother wants to become an electrician. Thanks for the electrical safety tips.

That is a great tip you suggested about getting a professional electrician to come in. If you do, make sure they are certified and licensed to be an electrician. That way, you can trust in their skills.

I really like that you mentioned getting a qualified electrician. This is a great way to make sure that you are getting a professional that will not let equipment get damaged or wet and avoid danger. My sister might like knowing this as she looks into getting an electrician for her new house.

It makes sense that during an electrical emergency you should stay away from any overhead wires to avoid getting injured. My uncle has been having some electrical issues in his house ever since he moved in last month and he worries that he will be harmed by the exposed wires. I will let him know to avoid wires during an emergency and to call an electrician.

A power line fell on my mom's property. I like how you mentioned to never touch a fallen power line therefore it is extremely dangerous and should be handled by professionals. Thank you for the advice. I'll contact an expert to handle this dangerous situation.

I appreciate your suggestions regarding the factors which should be taken into consideration to deal with a situation when your vehicle comes in contact with an overhead wire. Everyone should be aware of the basic aspects of safety to avoid any major fatal accidents. Besides, any signs which indicate that the wiring system of the vehicle has some sort of deformities should not be ignored. Such kind of issues should be repaired immediately to avoid power disruption.

Great point about how ground-fault circuit interrupters need to be repaired. I need to get an electrician to get my house grounded. I don't want to get shocked when I plug the vacuum in.
